Topical Fluoride vs. Systemic Fluoride: What's the Difference?
Topical fluoride goes directly on the surface of your teeth. We apply it in the office, and it works by soaking into the outer layer of enamel to strengthen tooth enamel where decay starts. Most adults and kids get this type at their regular cleanings.
Systemic fluoride works from the inside out. It's absorbed through supplements or fluoridated water during the years when teeth are still forming. This is especially important for younger patients because it helps strengthen developing teeth before they even come in. Dr. Rohr will tell you which approach fits your age and situation, and in some cases both make sense.
The Real Benefits of Fluoride for Your Whole Family
The benefits of fluoride come down to one thing: it makes your enamel harder to break down. Bacteria in your mouth produce acid every time you eat. Fluoride rebuilds the spots that acid attacks before they turn into cavities. That means fewer fillings, less sensitivity, and lower dental bills over time.
Professional fluoride treatments are more concentrated than anything you get from toothpaste or tap water. That higher dose is what makes the in-office version worth doing. If you're already brushing with fluoride toothpaste and still getting cavities, an in-office treatment can help prevent tooth decay where your home routine is leaving gaps.
When Should You Apply Fluoride?
For most patients, we apply fluoride at every routine cleaning, which means twice a year. If you have a history of frequent cavities, dry mouth, or gum recession, Dr. Rohr may recommend we do it more often. Dry mouth is common with certain medications, and it removes one of your mouth's natural defenses against decay, making fluoride even more valuable.
Kids generally benefit the most from consistent fluoride visits, but adults who have had a lot of dental work or who are at higher risk for decay see real results too. If you're unsure where you fall, just ask at your next appointment and we'll give you a straight answer.
